General Guidelines

Jewelry and gemstones require special care when wearing, storing, or cleaning.

• Don't wear fine jewelry when doing housework or gardening.
• Don't keep your jewelry into one drawer. Remember, a diamond ring can scratch that amber and bone products.
• Keep diamond jewelry separate and ideally wrapped in velvet, paper, or silk.
• Do check for loose stones frequently by gently tapping the piece with your finger near your ear.
• Do clean fine jewelry often to maintain its sparkle and beauty.
• Do not use toothpaste as its abrasives can damage softer gems and metals.
• A home ultrasonic cleaner should be used with extreme caution. It can be used to clean ruby, sapphire, diamond, iolite, amethyst, citrine, garnets, iolite, chrysoberyl, and unadorned gold jewelry but it may damage gems like emerald, pink tourmaline, peridot, pearls, coral, lapis lazuli, malachite, turquoise, and any gem that has many inclusions. When in doubt, don’t use it.

All fine jewelry can be safely cleaned by soaking for 10 minutes in warm soapy water (using a non-detergent soap). Use a soft brush on harder gems to loosen any dirt around the prongs. To reduce greasy build-up on gemstones jewelry ( excluding amber jewelry), dip it in plain alcohol or vodka before soaking.

Silver Care And Cleaning

Tarnish is a product of oxidation, caused by the interaction of silver jewelry with certain elements such as oxygen or sulphur as well as with certain acids. Tarnishing on silver jewelry, when worn on a regular basis, usually does not occur.

• Storage for a prolonged time causes silver jewelry to tarnish.
• Contact with rubber bands may cause tarnish - the sulphur in rubber is a catalyst for tarnish.
• Taking a medication that changes the acidity of your skin may cause silver jewelry to tarnish.
• To keep your silver tarnish-free, frequently clean your silver in a mild dish washing liquid diluted in water.
• Thoroughly dry your silver jewelry after exposure to water.
• Store silver in a dry container or a plastic bag with anti-tarnish paper.
• When storing your jewelry, try to avoid light and air. The natural patina of age is one of the beautiful aspects of jewelry -
  polishing the surface, while allowing natural oxidation over time can add depth, dimension, and beauty to your collection.

To remove tarnish or oxidation film from silver you can use fresh, uncontaminated commercial silver dip liquid, polish paste or polish cloth, available in supply or hardware stores. Make sure there are no loose stones or parts. Limit the gemstone's exposure to silver cleaners - cleaners may harm certain kinds of gemstones. Please read the cleaning product's instructions before cleaning. Thoroughly rinse jewelry after cleaning, and dry with a soft cloth until it's completely dry.

Care of Amber, Mammoth Bone

Amber has retained its beauty for million years and the polished lustre can be retained indefinitely, if a few precautions are observed. The softness, brittleness, and susceptibility to attack by chemicals of amber requires some special care in handling and storing.

• Do not put your amber jewelry on before hairspray and perfume is applied, because it will likely create a whitish coating on the amber that may be permanent.
• The first precaution is taken by the manufacturer stringing the beads on silk or linen thread with knots between each bead to prevent mutual rubbing and chipping. Amber jewelry should not be stored where it can rub against metal or other jewelry, and storage in a soft cloth is best
• Never put amber jewelry in an ultrasonic or steam cleaner, which would shatter the gem. Never let amber come in contact with strong solutions, soaps, detergents, commercial jewelry cleaning solutions, perfume, or hairspray. All of these can dull the finish and/or give a whitish coating. Keep the amber away from common kitchen substances such as lard, salad oil, butter and excessive heat of ovens and burners.
• Dust and perspiration can be removed with clean, lukewarm (never hot!) water and a soft flannel cloth. The amber can be dried and rubbed with clear olive oil, then rubbed with a soft cloth to remove excess oil and restore the polish.
• Do not place amber art objects near heating ducts or in direct sunshine. Displays in lighted showcases should be properly ventilated. Avoid exposure to sudden changes of temperature, such as hot tubs, very cold water, and reaching into ovens, followed by a cold sink. Remember never to wear jewelry you value when doing strenuous, physical activity (e.g. gardening).
• For cleaning bone faces, simply use a small amount of rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide with a cotton Q-tip, rinse and pat dry.

Costume Care And Cleaning

Often produced with non-precious metals, usually gold or silver plated, and with or without synthetic or glass stones, Costume jewelry could be antique, period, or contemporary. Today, there are many collectors of every style of costume jewelry. Be aware of tarnish which may occur as a result of oxidation, caused by the interaction of metal, silver or gold plated costume jewelry with certain elements such as oxygen or sulphur as well as with certain acids.

• Frequently clean it in a mild dish washing liquid diluted in water.
• Thoroughly dry after exposure to water or any type o liquid.
• Store your costume jewelry in a dry container or a plastic bag with anti-tarnish paper.
• Use fresh, uncontaminated commercial silver dip liquid, only.
• Use of a polish cloth, paste or other strong jewelry cleaner is not recommended.
